Why I love candid photography and how it shapes my work
Discover why candid photography is a key part of my documentary-style wedding approach, and how unposed, natural moments tell the true story of your wedding day.
As a documentary-style wedding photographer, my approach is all about capturing the raw, unposed moments that tell the real story of your wedding day. While posed photos certainly have their place, candid moments hold a special place in my heart, and they play a huge role in how I work. Let me take you through why I love candid photography and how it influences the way I capture weddings.
1. Candid moments feel more genuine
The beauty of candid photography lies in its authenticity. There’s something so much more powerful about a natural expression or an unguarded moment compared to something that’s been staged or posed. Whether it’s a spontaneous laugh, a stolen glance between the couple, or a tearful reaction from a parent, these are the moments that truly reflect the emotions and atmosphere of the day.
I love that candid photos allow people to be themselves, without worrying about how they look or where they’re standing. As a photographer, I aim to create an environment where people can simply be present and let the moment unfold naturally, capturing the true essence of their emotions. I often encourage the couple and their guests not to pay any attention to me – I’m there to capture what happens in a nonperformative way!
2. It helps tell a complete story
A wedding day is full of fleeting moments—emotional exchanges, laughter, surprise, and excitement—and candid photography allows me to document all of these moments as they happen. My goal is to tell the complete story of your wedding day, and candid photos are a key piece of that puzzle.
From the anticipation during getting ready, to the nervous energy before the ceremony, to the joy and celebration during the reception, candid photos provide a beautiful narrative that ties everything together. When you look at the final gallery, you’ll be able to relive the day as it unfolded, not just from a posed perspective but from a more intimate, storytelling viewpoint.
3. Candid moments capture the personality of the couple
Weddings are unique to each couple, and candid photos are the perfect way to showcase the individuality and personality of the people involved. Capturing all the “in between moments” results in a gallery that reflects how the couple interacts with each other, their family, and their friends, giving you a true sense of who they are as individuals and as a couple.
Whether it’s a funny, lighthearted moment or a quiet, tender exchange, candid photos highlight the little details that make your relationship and your wedding day uniquely yours.
4. It’s more natural and relaxed
Some couples feel nervous or uncomfortable in front of the camera, especially when posed. The beauty of candid photography is that it allows you to be more relaxed and in the moment. Instead of focusing on getting the perfect shot, you can simply enjoy your wedding day and let your photographer do the work of capturing your emotions as they occur.
The best photos are often snapped when you’re not paying attention to the camera—and they never feel forced! It’s a win-win.
5. It lets me focus on the overall atmosphere
While posed photos are essential for certain key moments, candid photography allows me to focus on the overall atmosphere and energy of the wedding. There’s an energy to the day that’s impossible to replicate in a posed shot—the way the light changes, the anticipation in the air, the sense of celebration. Candid photos allow me to capture the vibe of the entire event, from the smallest detail to the largest gesture.
I love being able to step back and photograph the wedding day as a whole, without interrupting or directing the natural flow of things. It’s all about documenting the mood and feelings of the day as they happen, letting the pictures reflect the truth and feeling behind the celebration. After all, the day isn’t about the photos – the photos are about the day!
