6 tips for including your pet in your wedding photos
Planning to include your pet in your wedding photos? Discover six tips for including your furry friend in your big day, while keeping safety in mind for both guests and vendors.
Fun fact: I got bit by a dog at a wedding I shot last summer! While it was a very small bite, it’s a good reminder of how important it is to be prepared when including your pet in your wedding photos. It’s such a sweet way to make your day even more memorable, but to ensure it goes smoothly for everyone—your pet, your guests, and your vendors—it's important to plan ahead. Here are six tips for including your pet in your wedding photos while keeping safety in mind.
1. Plan ahead for a pet-friendly timeline
Pets can be unpredictable, and while they might love being the center of attention, it’s crucial to plan your timeline to avoid any stressful moments. Be sure to leave time for your pet to rest before their photo debut and consider their energy levels when planning photo sessions. Consider the temperature on the day of your wedding as well. If you’re having a summer wedding, consider scheduling photos with your pet earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat!
2. Recruit a handler for your pet
Just as it’s important to have a pet-friendly timeline, you’ll want a handler to take care of your pet’s needs (and a backup handler if the first one is involved in your ceremony or family photos). This person should be someone familiar with your pet, who can step in if they’re feeling stressed, need to be walked, or simply need a break. Having someone who can manage your pet, or take them home when the time comes, will help avoid distractions or potential issues for your photographer or guests, and allow you the freedom to enjoy your day without being on dog duty.
3. Choose a pet-friendly location or venue
Before bringing your pup along, make sure your venue is comfortable and accommodating. Many venues allow pets during specific parts of the day, but others may have restrictions. In addition to checking the pet policy, it’s also a good idea to discuss safety precautions with the venue, especially if your pet is part of the ceremony or reception. Pets can get spooked by large crowds or unfamiliar noises, so choose a location with enough space for them to feel at ease. Also, make sure to consider the safety of your guests—some guests may be nervous around dogs, so make sure everyone is aware of their presence.
4. Keep your pet’s comfort in mind
Pets can get anxious or uncomfortable in new environments, so it's important to keep their comfort in mind. Whether it’s bringing their favourite toy, blanket, or snacks, ensuring they have things familiar to them can help keep them calm. Additionally, consider their safety during outdoor photos. If you’re taking your dog for a walk in a busy area, make sure they’re comfortable and secure. If your pet is wearing an outfit or accessory for photos, make sure it doesn't restrict their movement or cause any stress.
5. Capture candid moments with your pet
Some of the best photos happen when you least expect them—especially with pets. Rather than stressing about perfect poses, let your pet be part of your wedding day naturally. Whether it’s a spontaneous moment where you’re laughing with your dog or a quiet moment during portraits, these candid shots will create memories that feel authentic. A playful interaction with your pet or a loving look can add a personal, heartwarming touch to your gallery.
6. Don’t keep your pet there all day
While it’s lovely to have your pet involved in your big day, consider how long they’ll realistically be comfortable. The excitement, noise, and constant attention can be overwhelming, even for well-socialized pets. After a few photos and perhaps a walk down the aisle, it’s often best to have your pet handler take them home or to a quiet, comfortable space. This allows them to unwind while you enjoy the rest of your wedding day without worrying about their needs.
Safety first
As much as we love our pets (I’m a huge dog person myself!), safety should always be top of mind. Make sure your photographer is comfortable around animals and knows how to approach them safely, especially if you’re including them during important moments like the ceremony or portraits. It’s also a good idea to check with your venue or wedding coordinator about any precautions they have in place for animals, as you want to make sure everyone—pets, guests, and vendors alike—are safe throughout the day. Don’t forget to also consider your guests’ comfort, as some people may be allergic or uncomfortable around animals. Clear communication with everyone involved will help ensure that your pet’s role in the day remains a positive one!
